From Publishers Weekly
Cooper's exuberant talent, displayed so effectively in Family , is somewhat muted in this uneven collection of eight deceptively simple slice-of-life parables. Author tour.

From Library Journal
The first of eight stories in this collection focuses on a funeral but affirms life. Almost every speech uttered by the 90-year-old narrator contains the words, "I ain't ready." Luxuriating in the love of her extensive family, she tells God and all the world that she is not ready to die. Later stories deal with poverty, abusive husbands, drug addiction, and prostitution, but even these grim situations yield nurturing down-home wisdom. Most of Cooper's first-person narrators are shrewd black women, and on occasion the stories suffer from sameness in plots, themes, and characters. Usually, however, they are touching without falling into sentimentality and totally honest without becoming crude.

From Kirkus Reviews
Cooper's fourth collection (Some Soul to Keep, 1987, etc.): gritty, modern-day folk tales told in a richly lyrical colloquial style, mostly by and about women who are abused or devastated by men and by their environment but who sometimes prevail. In ``Vanity,'' a fable, a beautiful girl falls in love with a junkie who eventually gets her hooked on drugs, at which point ``the Guardian Angel gave up.'' The story graphically chronicles the girl's harrowing descent until, used up, she dies five years later. Cooper is big on homemade truths that manage to ring true without condescension to her characters or much sentimentality. In ``I Told Him!,'' the narrator, against her will, marries Wallace: ``I had gonorrhea eight times, siftless three times. I PRAYED he didn't bring nothin' home they couldn't cure.'' Finally, she finds the courage to divorce him and then remarries happily, while his descent continues. ``Friends, Anyone?'' is a Ring Lardnerish tale in which the narrator--who has lost her family and friends--damns herself as she tries to justify herself. ``The Big Day'' is told from the point of view of an old woman who cheerfully attends a friend's funeral and enjoys the company: ``Just think, if I'd a married him, I'd a had somebody to keep these old bones warm all these years my bed been empty.'' The old woman is one of Cooper's strong heroines, most notably portrayed in ``The Doras,'' in which a family of Doras (Dora, Lovedora, Windora, Endora, Splendora) survive betrayal, heartbreak, poverty, and dreariness to begin, with Adora, a whole new generation of Doras. Quirky tales in the tradition of Langston Hughes. Though Cooper occasionally leans too heavily on exclamation marks to indicate exuberance, mainly she brings home simple truths in tones that vary from wildly humorous to poignant. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Life is filled with Matter
By T. L. Cooper
The Matter is Life by J. California Cooper took me by surprise. I felt off-center as I began to read. Cooper uses language and grammar to give her characters voice and individuality. She writes stories that delve into the dirty aspects of life with an intense and uncomfortable honesty. Cooper writes life without dressing it up in frills and lace. Cooper addresses myriad topics from religion to drug use to family dynamics in this book of short stories. She delves into the way humans interact with one another as well as with themselves. She lets life's tatters and tears show. She creates raw and gritty characters in stories that feel all too real. The Matter is Life pushes the reader to think about why life matters and how to better embrace the what matters in life.

Life Happens
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
I have heard for years what a great writer J. California Cooper is and how people love just about anything she produces. Despite hearing all of the accolades and praises for this author, life happened and I never got around to reading one of her works. I could slap myself for all of the years I missed out on the tales from this adroit storyteller. Her dialogue brings Hurston to mind, and her characters in THE MATTER IS LIFE are just as strong as any of the greats. In fact, I am adding Cooper to my list of greats after reading this collection of beautifully human stories about how people can get in their own ways and how life is life.

My favorite story in this collection happened to be the longest. Could it be that I was able to savor even more of Cooper's wisdom in "The Doras?" It's possible, but more than that, this was a story that had me hanging on to every word about a woman with a dream for her daughters. The narrators in all the stories seem to be sages of sorts; the narrator isn't always a central character in the piece, but she seems to know all the goings on of the people of whom she speaks. This was refreshing and different, and I felt as though she and I were having an all-out gossip session. Don't get me wrong; the stories in this compilation are deep and to the point. There is a lesson to be learned within each tale's contributory pages.

I just can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this reading journey. My only complaint is that it was over too soon. Luckily for me, there are numerous other Cooper releases for me to enjoy.
