Excellent overview of the evidence for design in living things
By Sigrid
I found this book to be well written and interesting, though sometimes quite detailed. It's not "easy reading", that's for sure. Some might consider it more of a reference book on origins from an intelligent design perspective. Dr. Pitman argues, quite convincingly, that certain features of living machines (i.e., biomachines) can best be explained by deliberate intelligent design on at least the human level of intelligence and creativity or beyond. Beyond very low levels of functional complexity, which is carefully defined with numerous references to the literature on this topic, intelligent design appears to be required to explain the diversity of qualitatively unique biosystems that are remotely isolated in the vastness of exponentially expanding sequence space. Therefore, with each step up the ladder of functional complexity higher and higher levels of design are required until the degree of creativity needed cannot be readily distinguished from a God or God-like designer.
The argument for design is based on the very same argument for design used by various modern sciences, such as forensics, anthropology, and even SETI science. The argument is that the rational basis for design hypotheses used in such sciences can and does have general application potential - and that various features of living things meet the requirements proposed by the various sciences involved in detecting design behind various artifacts found in nature (crime scenes, arrow heads, pottery fragments, or radio signals from outer space). The conclusion is that the detection of design is clearly within the realm of science - even if the evidence of deliberate artifact be discovered within our own DNA.
In short, I highly recommend the effort to review this book - and to visit Dr. Pitman's website where many more ideas along these lines are presented in detail: [...]

A curious amalgam of iconoclastic and cultic views
By paul U Cameron
This book is written by a smart and well educated MD who is a 4th generation SDA and this is both its virtue and it vanity. A curious amalgam of cultic and scientific perspectives. As a generalist with a medical background Pitman writes very well, covers a wide range of topics and not surprisingly on a tabula rasa the arguments seem cogent and compelling. Gestalt the overall thrust of the arguments and scratch the surface of the science presented and the intent of the iconoclast becomes clear. Pitman's confidence and his beguiling familiarity with the science however means that you do have to go back to the primary literature he cites to see the strategies common to this genera of books.
Consistent with its provenance the overarching theme is that naturalism cannot explain origins which requires alternative explanations. Apparent design of the material world is not just apparent but is the result of a designer; The Judeo Christian God. Pitman's attack on the naturalistic explanations is 2 fold. He first claims that he understands the true nature of science and that detection of design is logical and central to science. He claims the true mantle of science and implies that "Darwinist" scientists have missed important aspects that he alone seems able to correct. He then takes the view that science is intrinsically wrong and unscientific in its adherence to naturalism and that logically it must accept that what cannot be explained requires a supernatural designer. His intellectual alignment with ID and the discovery institute is reinforced by the privilege he gives to theoretical, statistical and mathematical models as defining reality. Calculation of the vast sequence space required for denovo production of increasingly complex proteins leads to a proposed limit of 1000 fsaar (functionally specified amino acid residues) limit beyond which evolution cannot occur. He rejects random mutation and natural selection as explanations for speciation, and generation of new information or biological systems beyond very very low levels of complexity.
Having discounted almost all scientists and their work forming the bulk of the last 150 year of biology in the published literature, destroyed the basis of naturalistic explanation for the origin of species, Pitman then reverts to a designer based explanation of life history with a very literalistic biblical interpretation and explanation of the world and life as arising 6000 years ago over a 6 days of 24 hours complete with a genetic bottleneck at 3487 BC during a universal flood. Here we see the iconoclast is no more.
