This is a really impressive collection that describes some of the most dangerous secret societies and influence they have on humanity. There is speculation on their ultimate goal, and the information overall is well presented and researched. Enjoyable and educational, highly recommended.

lost interest in it so 1 star

A recent Kindle edition freebie.

I read through the first few chapters which was more of a boring forward than anything else, and then several of the chapters on actual secret societies. I really like books about such organizations, but this one just left me uninterested in finishing it so as is my custom with books I start and do not finish, I gave it one star.

What information is presented about the organizations is so limited that the book really does not give much information. It kind of reads like a book report. Maybe that was the point, but I already knew most of what was in the book (at least the part I read) and nothing there was presented in a way that interested me so I just gave up on the book.

The book touched on the organizations, but never more than looked at the surface and I can get that from 5 minutes of reading on the Internet.

The first four of his five sermons included here, which have been published in English (Our Sunday Visitor, 1986), originated as 1981 Lenten homilies given in Munich's cathedral to counter a modern abandonment of creation doctrine based on scripture. A fifth homily by a different translator augments this edition. Ratzinger's sermons treat God the creator, biblical creation accounts, creation of human beings, sin and salvation, and the consequences of faith on creation. Great intro 2 theological implications from Creation Account

This book is a collection of four homilies that were given by Cardinal Ratzinger on the creation account in Genesis. It gives a Catholic understanding of the theological implications from the teachings of creation found in Genesis. Cardinal Ratzinger starts with the importance about the necessity of properly understanding this, and the problems with ignoring the creation account. He shows how you cannot answer the question of "What we do" without first addressing the question of "What we are".
From this he proceeds to give a brilliant understanding of what it means to be a human being. What kind of creature we are and our place in creation. His first homily is based on "God the Creator" and its relevance to the differences between our view of God creating the world and other religions views. He then goes to his second homily "The Meaning of the Biblical Account", which gives a more balanced understanding of creation, and its cultural significance at the time. His third homily, "The creation of the Human Being" gives an understanding of what it means to be human and our place and reasons for being. His fourth, and final homily, "Sin and Salvation" gives and understanding of our nature, and our responsibility in our decision-making. Also touches upon the resurrection and the way it addresses our innate struggles. The book ends with an appendix that briefly goes into certain other semi related topics.
It should also be mentioned that Cardinal Ratzinger addresses the scientific implications of the creation account very little in this book. He addresses the problem in proving that the creation account was never meant to be a strict fundamentalist scientific view of how the world was created. He also shows how each account, cannot be separated from the others. And only in looking at the bible as a whole can you get the real meaning of the creation account. With that said, there are certain scientific dimensions that are involved in the creation accounts that cannot be denied. Cardinal Ratzinger briefly addresses this. But does not get into too much detail.
Overall, this book is a short, easy to read, explanation of the Christian understanding of what it means to be a human being, our nature, and our limitations. It gives an often misunderstood understanding of the creation account. This book is highly recommended for anybody who is trying to understand the Christian view of man, and the biblical basis for that.

Authoritative Interpretation

It is to be noted that from 1981 to 2005, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger held a second job in the Vatican. In addition to being Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he also served as President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. The latter board provides oversight for the study of Sacred Scripture within the Catholic church.

This set of homilies on the first chapters of Genesis, in continuity with the great encyclical Humani Generis by Pope Pius XII, sets forth the Catholic approach, which is neither fundamentalist nor rationalist. For example, how long is one of these days of creation? The fundamentalist says 24 hours or you're damned. The rationalist says billions of years or you're a fool. The Catholic says: Just as long as God wanted it to be, and not a minute more or less. How does the timeless God experience time? Not as we do. The Second Letter of Peter says "A thousand years are in your sight as a day, and a day as a thousand years." (But this gives us two yardsticks, which are not the same.) Since only God witnessed the first five days of creation, they were divine days, not human days.

We may hear more on this subject from Pope Benedict XVI in an encyclical in coming months. Stay tuned.

Insightful Expression of Catholic Beliefs

In this collection consists of five separate homilies of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger on the following themes: the Creator, the Biblical account of creation, the creation of man, original sin and faith in creation. This very theological work concisely lays out the Catholic understanding of creation.

Cardinal Ratzinger begins by explain how the passages in Genesis about creation should be interpreted, explaining that they cannot be read in isolation from the New Testament. They must be read with Christ.

He goes on to look at the symbolism found in Genesis, especially the symbolism of the Sabbath day with its meaning as a day of worship. He then goes on to assess human responsibilities to look after the world.

The third homily looks specifically to creation of the human being, arguing that all humans have their origins in the same earth and are all created in God's image and likeness. He argues that Genesis explains that there is one humanity and that through Christ humans can become the children of God. Cardinal Ratzinger then goes on to argue that the Biblical accounts explain what human beings are, whereas the theory of evolution explains how human beings developed. He affirms that the natural sciences explain how the divine project of creation grows.

The fourth homily addresses the issues of sin, human freedom and original sin, explaining that humans cannot save themselves and that Christ instead has redeemed humanity.

The concluding chapter talks about the reception of the idea of creation in modern times. He looks at the suppression of faith, naturalism, nihilism, and gnosticism. He finishes by arguing that the question of creation does matter and that creation is an inseparable part of Redemption.

A Captivating Look at Ourselves

Apollo 8 represented one of the most audacious decisions ever made in the history of space exploration. With the production of the spindly Lunar Module lagging and overdue, NASA took the bold step of sending a crew of three astronauts on a momentous journey from the Earth to the moon and back again. Undoubtedly it took the wind out of the sails of the Soviet effort in the titanic race to the moon, and we will always recall the deep poignancy as one by one the crew read from the book of Genesis that Christmas Eve of 1968. But there is another thing for which the journey of Apollo 8 will always be remembered, and that is the iconic photo we know as "Earthrise." Two celestial worlds in the one photograph, but the difference is profound. As mission commander Frank Borman states in this engrossing book, it was "the most beautiful, heart-catching sight of my life." Fellow crewmember James Lovell is also quoted as saying that "People down here don't realize what they have," while the third member of an otherwise fairly pragmatic crew , Bill Anders, reveals that he was "immediately almost overcome by the thought that here we came all this way to the moon, and yet the most significant thing we're seeing is our own home planet, the Earth."

This is a truly magnificent book, and not just because it explores the background of the cover photo and others, but in its own subtle way it causes us to take a good, long, hard look at ourselves. Many astronauts have said that it is a pity we can't all have the privilege of looking at our planet from space, because such things as wars and borders would become irrelevant in seeing Earth as a whole, united planet. We would embrace and want to protect it as our spectacularly sublime home, instead of trying our best to destroy or overwhelm it.

This book is not just about space programmes and explorers - it is about us, and a gloriously iconic photograph that made us all gasp in awe some 40 years ago. The author has done a exemplary job in creating this book, and it deserves to be around for a long time.

Seeing Ourselves in the Mirror

A captivating and fascinating book, Earthrise brought back childhood memories of being glued to the TV on Christmas Eve, 1968 and hearing Borman, Lovell and Anders read from the Book of Genesis and signing off just before they went around the dark side of the moon by wishing a Merry Christmas and God's blessings to all of us "on the good earth". A few weeks later the famous Earthrise photo became public and I remember being so fascinated by the starkness between the the black of space, the gray of the moon and the blue and white "floating half-sphere" of our home.

The author Robert Poole does a great job capturing these 1968 moments again and subsequent moments of the lunar landing, the 1972 "Blue Marble" photo and other related tidbits of what seems like yesterday but is now surpassing 40 years. We have not looked at our home the same since...and those born after 1968 may not comprehend fully the impact of these photos on not only our national, but global society.

My only disappointment with the book and hence 4 stars has to do with some poor proof reading and fact checking. For example, "...waters called He seas." (see p. 26), a couple of references to "three-manned" Gemini missions (p. 69 and 125)- [they were all two-manned missions]; Jacques Cousteau "diving at an island off New Mexico." (p.120) and mention of a 1963 encyclical by Pius XII on page 132. Pius XII died in 1958. Finding this many errors in an otherwise very good book make me a bit skeptical that there may be other errors as well. I hope not!

D. Brent Stephens is currently the principal of Anthony Ochoa Middle School in Hayward, California. He has also served as a K–8 principal in Somerville, Massachusetts; as a central office administrator in Lowell, Massachusetts; and as a Spanish bilingual teacher in Boston and Oakland, California. He holds a doctorate from the Urban Superintendents Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and has earned certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Black Internationalist Feminism examines how African American women writers affiliated themselves with the post-World War II Black Communist Left and developed a distinct strand of feminism. This vital yet largely overlooked feminist tradition built upon and critically retheorized the postwar Left's "nationalist internationalism," which connected the liberation of Blacks in the United States to the liberation of Third World nations and the worldwide proletariat. Black internationalist feminism critiques racist, heteronormative, and masculinist articulations of nationalism while maintaining the importance of national liberation movements for achieving Black women's social, political, and economic rights. Cheryl Higashida shows how Claudia Jones, Lorraine Hansberry, Alice Childress, Rosa Guy, Audre Lorde, and Maya Angelou worked within and against established literary forms to demonstrate that nationalist internationalism was linked to struggles against heterosexism and patriarchy. Exploring a diverse range of plays, novels, essays, poetry, and reportage, Higashida illustrates how literature is a crucial lens for studying Black internationalist feminism because these authors were at the forefront of bringing the perspectives and problems of black women to light against their marginalization and silencing. In examining writing by Black Left women from 1945–1995, Black Internationalist Feminism contributes to recent efforts to rehistoricize the Old Left, Civil Rights, Black Power, and second-wave Black women's movements.

A very important book

Cheryl Higashida has written an important book for today's social movements--Black Internationalist Feminism. Think about it, for some in the Occupy movement the terms "Black" "Internationalist" and "Feminism" are not even in their vocabulary, and the many for whom they are, it is essential to bring that debate frontally into today's movement. Higashida's book is a critical window into left history, a less examined but historically pivotal investigation into the work of Black left women,all as part of a broad anti-racist, anti-imperialist united front, many of whom working with the Communist Party, "women writers of the Black Left from 1945 to 1995" Almost all of the Black women discussed saw the primary struggle in the world as between oppressor nations--in particular, U.S. imperialism--versus those nations oppressed by imperialism, the nations and peoples of the Third World including Black people inside the borders of the United States. But within that tradition, Higashida focuses on the critical frame of Black feminism, again Black anti-imperialist feminism, including the fierce struggle against patriarchy, homophobia, and misogny inside and outside the Black nation. Her opening chapter "the Negro question, the Woman Question, and the "Vital Link" is a great frame for the discussion--and if you are new to this line of argument, a great introduction for any reader who is interested in feminism, Black liberation, and socialism. She has important chapters on Lorraine Hansbury and Rosa Guy (which I have not yet read but plan to soon) and Audre Lorde Revisited: Nationalism and Second Wave Black Feminism that I have read with great attention and appreciation. (I wrote a chapter about Audre Lorde in my book Playbook for Progressives. I wish Cheryl's book had been published first because it would have strengthened my understanding but I am happy to say that the search for knowledge continues and I have learned a lot from her complex and astute interpretation of Lorde's work.) And remember, these are Black women WRITERS so there is the joy of trying to understand the complex issues of content, form, collective and individual biography that they are grappling with, and which Higashida navigates with great, and at times, brilliant insight and synthesis. Black Internationalist Feminism pays great attention to historical detail and line of argument; Higashida's prose is straightforward and the issues she is addressing are of great import for people's lives. This is not an easy journey, it takes some real digging in to follow the line of argument, but only because the Black women whose work she is analyzing were true heavyweights of history, and require our best attention. For young women of color, especially Black women, who have been denied the chance to learn the history of such Black feminist, anti-imperialist, and often pro-socialist giants, this book is a real gift. For anyone who suffers oppression under imperialism or who supports the struggles of those who do Black Internationalist Feminism is an eye opener.
