The staunchly anticommunist United States, Brogi argues, found a successful balance to fighting the communist threat in France and Italy by employing diplomacy and fostering instances of mild dissent in both countries. Ultimately, both the French and Italian communists failed to adapt to the forces of modernization that stemmed both from indigenous factors and from American influence. Confronting America illuminates the political, diplomatic, economic, and cultural conflicts behind the U.S.-communist confrontation.

An excellent and fair research

"Confronting America" by Prof.Alessandro Brogi is a valuable study about a fundamental matter of the Cold War: the battle for the hearts and souls of the people of the west, fought by America and its allies against the hypocrisy of the Soviet Union and their fellow communist movements and parties, of whom the Italian and the French ones were the biggest, respectively.
Without any of the usual bias we can find in contemporary works (i.e. the last one of Prof.John Lamberton Harper, who, by his own admission "came to like the communists" during his stay in Bologna), "Confronting America" gives a fair and clear description of what was at stake in the period beetween the 1945 to 1980 and how and why the West eventually succeeded. This is a book that young generations should read in order to understand not only contemporary history better (which still influences their lives) but also some aspects of their own country, the US, that they seem to overlook and take for granted. A society open to dissent and confrontation has been much stronger than the russian burocratic monolith. When american students travel abroad they should bear in mind that after all their society is much more free than what they think, and it's with a book like this that they can realize how much similar and at the same time how different is Western Europe from America.

Readers will be pleased with this book if they are interested with the design of the Alien film not so much the theme of the film or Giger's art. The book is set up in pseudo biographical form that records the chain of events that led up to the production of the Alien film, through the eyes of Giger. While it does contain many of Giger's paintings they are not the center of the book rather than a means of describing film design and offering a contrast between Giger's vision and the outcome of the film. Giger's Alien is an excellent companion book to a classic film. It is written from Giger's diaries about his experience on the production of the film. It also has many behind the scene photographs. A very entertaining behind the scenes book about a classic film.

The only thing more horrific than the ALIEN is the asking price of Amazon sellers. This book was selling in new condition for about $18.00 plus shipping a week or so ago. Now every seller on Amazon in their greedy thirst has increased their prices to ridiculous expectations.

About the Author

Randall Munroe is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller What If?, the science question-and-answer blog What If, and the popular webcomic xkcd.  A former NASA roboticist, he left the agency in 2006 to draw comics on the Internet full-time, supporting himself through the sale of xkcd t-shirts, prints, posters, and books. He likes candlelight dinners and long walks on the beach. Very long walks. Why this book is not stupid at all

This book shows you that understanding how something works and knowing its name are different. In doing so, it makes you consider when and why it's actually important to use a special name for some things, and think harder about what your words are really telling people. The point of this book is not to explain things as well and as quickly as possible. It's to help you use your thinking bag in a different way than you do every day. That's why it's so much fun to read.
I'm a teacher at a school for people who already know a lot, and who are very good at what they do. (I teach them about power for our lights and machines.) We use big words and special names all the time. But I sometimes ask my students to try explaining complicated stuff using only simple words, because when you do that, you find out whether you really understand it. It forces you to ask, what is the most important idea here? I wish more teachers did this.
Putting ideas into simple words can also help you recognize how different words carry meaning other than just telling you what something is. This is especially true for things that people often have strong feelings about, like the laws of the land, or our body parts for making new people, or machines for burning cities. Special words can quietly suggest if something is a good or a bad idea, or cover up bad feelings. Playing the game of using only simple words can help you see things more clearly for what they actually are, and say just what you mean. So, this book shows us a way to pay special attention to how our own thinking bag works. And I think that's really, really cool.

Great words about "Thing Explainer" It is a big book! It is a very good book!

The thing about this book is that it only uses the ten hundred most used words by people to tell you about things that are hard to understand. It makes it sound kind of strange because you hear some words over and over again, but all in all, it is a very fun book to look at.

The man that wrote the book wrote about "Under a car's front cover" and the "US Space Team's Up Goer Five" and lots of things that have to do with a "Sky Boat." There is a page about "Colors of Light" but it is in black and white, so it is not as good as other pages. There is a big table in the middle that is "the pieces everything is made of" that has "the stuff they put in pools so nothing bad can grow in them," "brown metal that we use to carry power and voices" and "stuff you drink so doctors can look inside your body" along with all the other rocks and metals and air that is really fun to look at.

I paid money for "Thing Explainer" to put it under the tree for my seven year old, but I will have to read it before he does, I am sure.

About the Author
Professor Brian Cox, OBE is a particle physicist, a Royal Society research fellow, and a professor at the University of Manchester as well as researcher on one of the most ambitious experiments on Earth, the ATLAS experiment on the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. He is best known to the public as a science broadcaster and presenter of the popular BBC Wonders trilogy. Andrew Cohen is Head of the BBC Science Unit and the Executive Producer of the BBC series Human Universe. He has been responsible for a wide range of science documentaries including Horizon, the Wonders trilogy and Stargazing Live. He is an honorary lecturer in Life Sciences at the University of Manchester and lives in London with his wife and three children.

Taken was no exception with great writing, and strong personal connections

Dee Henderson is one of my top 5 authors. Her books are always stay-uppers(you stay up all night until you’ve finished the book, no matter how long it takes) as I call them. Taken was no exception with great writing, and strong personal connections.

The suspense is there but it’s not the same as her other suspense novels. I consider this a lazy suspense, your not gripping your seat, but your stuck there. It’s a slow build up that’s makes you feel like you’re out of the loop at first. Hang in there through all the holding back, it all comes together.
I am always amazed how Henderson works God into the plot. This book is wonderful for Christians and non-believers.

I would recommend anything written by Dee Henderson.
