Stevenson's _Humus Chemistry_ is THE source on soil organic matter (SOM), namely humic substances. It played an instrumental role as a reference in support of my masters thesis. I would recommend the book highly to anyone taking a course and/or with a serious interest in any aspect of SOM.

which I found to be tedious, if not boring

HUMUS CHEMISTRY arrived very soon after I ordered it. HUMUS CHEMISTRY ihas much information about the chemistry and nature of humus. Much of the book, however, is devoted to materials and methods. Since Stevenson, the author, is an active researcher, I can understand HUMUS CHEMISTRY's having so much background about materials and methods. The materials and methods also helps to explain the often contradictory results obtained by various researchers. Because so much time is devoted to materials and methods, which I found to be tedious, if not boring. This is not a book for someone who wants to learn about HUMUS, per se.

Don't leave a bad rating for a computer error.

I have read all of your books and I am a true fan. I understand that the site is having technical difficulties which is not your fault. I find it sad that fans would blame you and give you a low rating not for your work but for a computer glitch. I implore all readers to write to Amazon and stop leaving a bad rating. This only hurts the author which is not justified. When you do get to read the book you'll see how amazing it is!

I experienced the same problem as many when reading Demetrius. What I was able to read was every bit as good as I expected. Looking forward to Amazon releasing the corrected version. Barbara Devlin is an awesome author. I love her books and will continue to purchase them in the future!

I Fell in Love with Demetrius

In one afternoon and evening, I fell in love with Demetrius--both the character and the book. Barbara Devlin has given Demetrius such dimension and kindness, while not betraying the rugged characteristics one would expect of such a masculine character. All the characters have similar warmth and balance, and the book is written with the historical accuracy for which Devlin is known. The result is an amazingly entertaining read.

About the Author

Jerome Klapka (K.) Jerome was an English writer who is best known for his comic travel story, Three Men in a Boat, and the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. Raised in poverty, Jerome entered into various careers in the railway, theatre, education, and law before his comic essays were accepted for publication. His writing career firmly established with the publication of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome went on to publish more than thirty works of prose and plays before his passing in 1927.

The question/answer format of this book captures the feelings and emotions emitted by Alex Stewart. As each chapter unfolded, I gained additional insight into the "tough" life of a Appalachian family in the early 1900s. The number of skills possessed by Alex Stewart is remarkable. I agree with the author; when Alex Stewart died, an entire library of information went to the grave with him. I've ordered a copy for my 82 year old mother. She will be thrilled to read about making "lye soap", curing meat, and the many other skills discussed.

An Astounding Man!

This is an amazing tale about an amazing man. For anyone who grew up in the Appalachian Mountain region, or who has an interest in the region, this book is an absolute must read. The television and print media have gone out of their way to play up the "stupid hillbilliy" vision of these people. Alex Stewart puts that to rest, and then some. I was amazed at the many skills Alex possessed and I was deeply touched by the depth of the relationship between Alex and the author. People like Alex Stewart are disappearing rapidly, soon not to be seen again. We would all do well to learn about them and learn from them.

fascinating read for the "modern" mind

I bought this book at the Museum of Appalachia (also founded by the author) on my first visit to Tennessee. The book is almost entirely a transcript of a dialogue/interview between the author and Alex Stewart. At first, I thought this would be a strange format, but as I read on, I discovered that this would be the only way to authentically capture the mind and spirit of Alex on paper.
If you're not from the South, you might find Alex's dialect charminging unusual. A few times I had to read a passage over and over again to fully understand what words Alex was saying. Here is an example where it took me a while to realize that Alex meant "Lord" when kept saying "Law":
"They didn't have no men folks, but they had several children. Making liquor was the only way they had of making a living. Law, they had it hard."
The author cleverly asks questions to get Alex to reveal his pioneer wisdom. More than that, though, the author's selections and chapter arrangements helped to organize the sprawling encyclopedia of Alex's mind.
By the time I reached the end, I was sad to have the "conversation" over. I felt I had known Alex a bit personally, and I mourned at his passing. It was joyous reading while it lasted and my heart ached to know more of Alex.
This is a fabulous book I can't recommend enough. 10 STARS.

Tom Kenyon is the founder and director of Acoustic Brain Research Inc., a recognized leader in psychoacoustic research and development. Mr. Kenyon created ABR in 1983 so that we would be able scientifically to document the effects of sound, music, and language on the human nervous system and on human behavior. Through the use of hypnotic states and sound healing, Mr. Kenyon has created methods that accelerate therapy and bahavioral changes. Brain state rollercoaster

At the back cover of this book there are such glowing reviews such as "Sensational book ... pivotal work ... provocative reading ...", but this book contains barely any thoughts that originate from the writer of this book. It is essentially a compillation of excerpts from books and techniques that have been around for a very long time - like Image Streaming Technique from The Einstein Factor by Win Wenger, Microcosmic Orbit from Awakening Healing Light of Tao by Mantak Chia, bits and pieces from NLP Techniques - mainly dealing with submodalities) and the work of Richard Bandler, bits and pieces from Vibrational Medicine by Richard Gerber, etc.

In the foreword to this book the author writes "I would write this book on weekends, late at night, and sometimes sandwiched between clients. I wrote parts at 30,000 feet on cross country plane flights" - and that's exactly how this book reads.

There are many other books that present works of other people, and that this book doesn't seem to have any original thoughts coming from the author (except few insights he got from his dog) wouldn't be a problem - the problem is that the book has no flow to it and every few sentences, as the author seems to change his state of mind, you are thrown into another direction, never sure if you're coming or going.

Since the book is entitled "Brain States", I have actually expected that that is what is book is going to be about, but there is only one chapter with 9 pages that deals directly with brain states.

Every once in a while, the author uses metaphors which I'm not sure how helpful they are in helping the reader to understand the main point. For example, to help the reader better understand neurons, he compares them to amoebas, and concludes that amoebas and neurons are not animals, but very few animals can live without them. I don't know if that was supposed to be funny or insightful, but there are books that much better explain neuroanatomy, that few pages at the beginning of this book.

It seems that the author has attempted to present here so many different techniques from different traditions and modalities and which may be helpful in alleviating problems or boosting performance that practically none of them are adequately explained.

The choice of books from which the excerpts for this book are taken is good and the reader would derive much greater benefit by reading those books. In that respect, I believe the 6 pages of the Appendix C with Resources to be the most valuable part of this book.

The prose is random, taking you off in a million different directions, but I giggled and laughed out loud as I read the adventures of Reg, Death and friends as they began their journey from the ridiculous to the sublime, looking for a new location for hell, on earth!
It's a little Pratchett-esque in places, taking you round in circles with the clever narrative, and the jokes come thick and fast... A really enjoyable read."

Learn better methods through activities

I purchased this book for a masters class and it was really a worthwhile read. This is a great book that looks in depth at areas of mathematics we have to teach in K-8 education. The book includes several activities which I highly recommend doing as you read! I learned things about prime numbers, multiplication, and many other subjects which I had either long-since forgotten or never actually learned. This book helped me to reevaluate how I was teaching mathematics and how I can present information in a way that will help students internalize number concepts rather than just memorizing processes.

A Must have!!!!!!!!!

This is not just a text book approach to math for students. It offers teachers many options, ideas, and approaches to the math for students. It also provides reminders of the thought process and the math involved in given situations. I appreciated the "review" for me and therefore, for my students. Things I would have taken for granted, I now realize must be reviewed for the students. Thank you.

thorough, if unexciting

Conceptual, rather than procedural teaching of math--that is what this book tries to encourage. Although elementary math teachers can often (but not always) find the right answers for math problems, they overwhelmingly are ignorant as to WHY they follow steps spelled out in the procedure they learned so long ago. A teacher who does not know why cannot teach why. This makes for students floating in a permanent math fog. This book tries to fill the gap by laying out math basics--the mathematical principles behind the steps. I am a bit disappointed that no mention is made of the identity properties, but all in all, this book does a good, if sterile job. If you want to get EXCITED about understanding elementary math, you need to read Liping Ma's Knowing and Teaching Elementary Math.

About the Author
Wayne Liquorman (b. 1951) describes himself as being “completely ordinary.” He grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and then attended the University of Hawaii where he graduated with a BA in Creative Writing. He then returned to Southern California, married, fathered two children and started an import/export business. A nineteen-year bout with active alcoholism and drug addiction ended spontaneously in 1985 leaving him sober and a spiritual seeker. His goal became to determine, “what power in the Universe could transform me so suddenly and against my will.” After 16 months of daily involvement with the Twelve Steps and intensive spiritual seeking, he met his guru, the retired president of the Bank of India turned Advaitic Sage, Ramesh S. Balsekar. He soon began publishing Ramesh’s books and arranging Ramesh’s speaking tours. Spiritual Awakening occurred for Wayne in April of 1989, soon after which he wrote the book NO WAY…for the Spiritually Advanced. He published the book under the pen name Ram Tzu because he didn’t want “a bunch of miserable seekers cluttering up my living room.” Clearly, life had other plans for him. In 1996 Ramesh instructed Wayne to teach. When Wayne tried to convince Ramesh he was not suited to be a teacher, Ramesh answered his objections with the simple words, “if they come, talk to them!” People began coming and Wayne now spends half of each year traveling the world, talking about personal powerlessness and Advaita to groups of interested people (and often has a bunch of spiritual seekers cluttering up his living room when he is not traveling!) His Living Teaching and his powerful presence continue to touch the lives of many. This is his fifth book. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!

"I drank myself to death and was resurrected as the Guru." - Wayne Liquorman.

This is Wayne's best book. And they are all great.

I have to admit I have a strong bias towards Wayne and this book, but after some consideration I do know the book is as great as I think it is. I have now read it twice. It is usually all I can do to get through most books once.

I was a spiritual seeker for many years and had been with really, really great gurus and teachers and received tremendous benefit from them on many levels. And then after reading Wayne's first book, No Way by Ram Tzu (a.k.a. Wayne Liquorman), we invited Wayne to our center. I thought he would be a very interesting and amusing teacher, but did not expect him to have too much impact, especially with me. What I didn't know was that outside my conscious awareness I had been building up critical mass around a certain essential issue of life and Wayne would be the one who dropped the feather that would bring everything tumbling down.

Wayne said something like, "If you were really in control of your life, wouldn't you be doing a better job of it? Wouldn't you always be happy, healthy, wealthy , enlightened and in love? Well, wouldn't you?" Simple enough statement. Certainly something to be considered and looked at. But at that moment, I was at the tipping point. Critical mass had been reached. I had a major satori, perhaps the major satori of my life and I saw beyond a shadow of a doubt that "I" am not the author of my life or any aspect of my life. "I" am powerless. That whatever "I" have clearly has been given to me.

Although this was seen clearly at the time, it took a few years for the repercussions to fully filter through. I didn't speak about it for awhile because it was seen so clearly that it seemed obvious that everyone knew this. How could it be otherwise?

This book is about that realization or understanding, but it is much deeper and more profound than my words portray it to be. This book is about two approaches to this truth, "you are not the author of your life." One is the eastern advaita approach of "not two," or , as The Yoga Vasistha says, "All there is, is Consciousness." When I met Wayne, I was already familiar with this approach. The other approach is The 12 Steps of Recovery. Although I have suggested AA, NA or OA to many people over the years, I had no idea what the 12 steps were or why and how they really can work. Now I do. And I must say Wayne has done a brilliant job of showing why both of these approaches are so important for anyone who wants to stop suffering, and why they can go hand in hand, supporting and strengthening the other.

Wayne uses the ancient metaphor of Ocean (Consciousness) being all there is, waves being expressions of all there is as us human beings and whatever else appears, and droplets as the "appearance" or apparent "experience" that somehow someone can actually be separate from all there is, an encapsulated "ego" separate from all and everything, Good trick if you can do it!

This is a short book. Read it slowly and carefully. Really get what it is saying before you read on to the next section. And then read the whole book again. It will be well worth it. This book may very well be the grace you need to end your suffering. As Wayne says, "May it find you now."

A beautiful blending of the twelve steps and spirituality

Have you ever found a book that seems to be speaking to exactly the issues and questions you have been mulling over in your own life? That is what The Way of Powerlessness, Advaita and the Twelve Steps of Recovery is for me. This book brings together two extremely important elements in my life- my spiritual journey and my involvement in a 12 step program.

I would recommend this for anyone participating in a 12 step program who is interested in delving more deeply into the spiritual aspects of the program. The author also does a wonderful job of explaining the twelve steps in a clear and concise manner for those who have never had an opportunity to work with them.

The author shares his experience and deep insight into the roots cause of our suffering. Each chapter speaks to a separate step with examples of how our need to control and manage life actually leaves us more out of control and unhappy- what a paradox! The author has a unique perspective on guilt and an understanding of this can go a long way towards allowing more peace in one's life.

This is a book that I am sure I will use as a reference for years to come and a great gift for anyone involved in a twelve step program.

Five stars is not enough.

This is interesting. I've never written anything for public consumption before, so am a trifle nervous about writing a review of my guru's latest book. There was resistance and I thought "I might mess it up. I might write some really stupid stuff". Then I laughed at my own absurdity. So here goes:

I was reading it on the train home from a weekend with Wayne in London and had that experience where you look around, read a bit, look up again and everything's clearer, and I'm more present. Wonderful. But I knew something was really getting inside me as I neared the end. My ego (FSA if you know Wayne's terminology) reared up, and I really wanted to rip that book to pieces. Fortunately I recognised what was going on and am happy to report that the book is still intact.

This is a really powerful book. I hope it gets you like it got me!

Wonderful, gorgous book of embroidery mixed with patchwork

This book was a must-buy for me as soon as I picked it up. The artist offers many "redwork" embroidery patterns in this book. I love her drawing style and the projects. Several of the projects combine a little piecing with the embroidery, which is my favorite combination.

Not an extensive book but it would still have to be one of my favourite purchases from Amazon ever! Such beautiful patterns. I have embroidered the sweet bird on the cover onto about 6 projects already and I will certainly be using every pattern in the future.

Great designs, clear instructions

I really enjoyed looking at this book. The stitch diagrams look very clear and comprehensive. Kathy Schmitz has a great style, and there are several projects I want to do in this book.

This book is a very good introduction for planning theory

Got my book on time, I chose one-day shipping because I needed the book fast, Amazon guaranteed the delivery on time and I am very impressed. This book is a very good introduction for planning theory. If it wasn't a required text, there is no way I would be reading it. I feel like the author could have made his point without as many words or concept, for every paragraph you read, you have to research a term or concept used. some of which I should know, but can't remember because it was since my undergrad days.
