Review: 'The Lonely Hearts Travel Club - Destination Thailand' by Katy Colins
By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings"
Georgia Green was supposed to get married to her long-term boyfriend, but instead life threw her a few curve balls and now she finds herself on a quick trip to Turkey, lying on the beach with her best friend Marie while crying her eyes out. When she also gets fired from her job, Georgia realises she desperately needs a break from everything, preferably as far away as possible. With a bucket list of things she wants to do, she decides to go on a six-week tour through Thailand. Georgia can't wait to leave Manchester behind and discover this strange land and meet some new people; it's an adventure she desperately needs. But as the trip seems to only go from worse to worse, Georgia starts to doubt whether she was really made to travel and perhaps this wasn't such a brilliant idea after all...
What a great and promising start to a new book series! Author Katy Colins used part of her own experiences to write 'The Lonely Hearts Travel Club: Destination Thailand' and this resulted in a fabulous chick lit novel I am sure a lot of readers will enjoy just as much as I did. Personally, I am not the kind of girl who has always dreamed of travelling to the other side of the world and if I'm honest the word 'backpacking' already makes me want to hide under my desk, but even if you're not a fan, main character Georgia will easily warm your heart and make you want to continue reading. She really is a great and admirable protagonist; a bit too naive at times, but that makes her real and flawed, just like all of us. I loved joining her on her adventure to Thailand and the storyline held my interest throughout the entire novel, especially since there were quite a few unpredictable things happening which I didn't see coming.
Katy Colins' writing style is great; there's just the right amount of detail, dialogue, setting descriptions, and it's really well-paced. Next to Georgia, there is a fascinating group of secondary characters; a lot of them just make small appearances but still really add their own touch to the story. I particularly liked Georgia's parents and her best friend Marie, and the fact that there were also some characters to really dislike (I'm not going to mention names since I don't want to spoil anything!). The next part of the series is set in India and I already can't wait to read it. 'The Lonely Hearts Travel Club: Destination Thailand' is a feel-good, well-written and enthralling novel which I enjoyed from start to finish; the perfect escape to a bit of sunshine during these cold winter days!

Disappointed
By ELIZABETH C
I was sort of disappointed in the book. I thought it was going to be a story about the author's actual travel experience. I do not plan on buying the other two books.

Fun Read
By H2OJunkie
This is not superb classic literature. It reads more like a romance novel than one of the greats, but it was definitely a fun read. As someone who just got out of a relationship and is planning joining the Peace Corps to really start a new life, I was anticipating something a bit more motivational, but it was still a nice quick fun read.
I came across this because I read an article about the author and her travels. I was not prepared for it being a work of fiction, but I'm not disappointed by that either. It's just very apparent that the author has little writing experience. I look forward to her gaining momentum and possibly learning how her own voice works in print.
The cons:
I abhor when an author feels the need to explain the relevance of something. This happened a lot in this book, making it feel more like a cheap romance novel than a great story. Trust the reader to draw their own conclusions. The same goes for first person omnipotence. It is not okay to write in first person narrative and tell the reader what another character's thoughts are. Ever.
I never felt drawn in to the characters because the writing is so surface. Georgia's low self esteem is evident, but there is no real struggle. Everything seems to happen TO her and then she finally is able to react "just like she always wanted," which is not how life works. It was just too contrived. There needs more emotional development and entanglements. Life simply doesn't work this way and it's honestly sort of boring to read.
The pros:
Despite the writing needing work and everything being wrapped up in a pretty bow, with fairy tale endings to every storyline, it was fun to read. I'm glad it wasn't any longer, because I felt myself losing interest. It was just the right length for me to feel like I had a fun read.
In conclusion:
I love the concept of gaining self-awareness through travel. There was one reference to Eat, Pray, Love in the book and it made me chuckle. Elizabeth Gilbert is a terrible wife, but she owns that. She says she is imperfect and even at the end, nothing is really perfect. She's still the same flawed person, but with a bit more perspective, which, despite me not exactly liking her as a person, I think is admirable. The Georgia character in this novel, in juxtaposition, ends up with everything she wants landing perfectly in her lap. She tells off people she needs to tell off, her father makes a miraculous recovery, and she magically has enough money to open a business as a big, "F you!" to her ex, his former lover, and her old boss. And everybody wants her back in their lives. As if she's some magical princess that after a trip to Thailand, has the absolute perfect life. Sorry, but that's just not believable. I do hope the author develops her voice and this character further in the next few books. I already bought them on pre-sale as I love supporting new writers, especially ones like this one who took a real chance on themselves! That's the best story here!
