We see how international experience in urban and architectural conservation was adapted to local materials and know-how. The need to modernize infrastructure and upgrade public spaces was reconciled with the equally present need to preserve the cultural identity of place through the reuse of conserved structures, made possible due to the adoption of specific stone masonry repair techniques. Proceeding according to a pre-approved but flexible master plan, the recovery of the Beirut city center is a major postwar reconstruction and urban regeneration project.

In the 1980s, "downtown Beirut" became synonymous with bombed-out urban devastation, reflecting the destruction wrought by the Lebanese civil war on its capital. However, under a determined and strictly implemented restoration plan, Beirut's Foch-Allenby and Etoile areas, originally "destined to be the showcase of France in the Levant," have re-emerged as vibrant and active urban centers, with some resumption of Beirut's complicated emotional heritage as a major Mediterranean port. This impressive civic rebirth, as recorded by scholar Saliba (Beirut: 1920–1940) in this dense 9.5"×13" architectural history, was undertaken by the Soldiere company, according to strict historical, archeological and architectural preservationist standards. Despite the overly dry, jargonish and repetitive text ("interface" is one word that the reader will hope to never see again), the book is filled with 313 color and 86 b&w photographs and architectural survey. In addition, transparent overlays document the various archeological strata and cultural/historical sites of Beirut. An overwhelming number of streets and buildings gutted by bombs, and recorded in harrowing yet strangely beautiful "before" photographs, have been reconstructed exactly. The lines of the Foch-Allenby and Etoile's elegant buildings, with French architectural influences married to traditional structures such as the "riwaq," trace Lebanon's complex history.

About the Author

Ronald Quan is a member of SMPTE, IEEE, and the AES. He worked on the design of wideband FM detectors for an HDTV tape recorder at Sony Corporation, and a twice-color subcarrier frequency (7.16 MHz) NTSC vector-scope for measuring differential phase and gain for Macrovision, where he was a Principal Engineer. Ronald currently holds at least 65 US patents in the areas of analog video processing, low noise audio and video amplifier design, low distortion voltage controlled amplifiers, wide band crystal VCOs, video monitors, audio and video IQ modulation, audio and video scrambling, bar code reader products, audio test equipment, and video copy protection.

Analog electronics education in a hobbyist book on transistor radios

I must admit that I came to this book somewhat math challenged.
I tend to be more interested in a historical perspective. But having said that, Mr. Quan has written a book that somehow manages to cover all bases here.

Using the AM radio as a context, starting with the most basic simple circuits, then building upon each concept, he manages to cover the history and development of the major types of circuits used for AM radio reception, and the math and theory behind each circuit building block, show plans and schematics with detailed parts lists and sources to not only construct several types of AM radios, but also to make your own test oscillators and modulators for developing and testing circuits under construction. He also has a section covering the details of other equipment needed, and some inexpensive ways to obtain it, to equip your "radio electronics experimentation lab".

He goes on to discuss improvements to circuits and trade-offs in further development between performance, cost and power consumption giving you the chance to improve designs previously constructed and measure the improvements.

If you spend any time with this book you will not only learn to build and design your own AM radio circuits, but you will be well on your way to understanding a lot of the theory behind all analog electronic design. Well done !

Build Your Own Transistor Radios

This book is a very refreshing book with a unique approach to radio receiver design. Don't be fooled by the title, "Building Your Own Transistor Radios". This book is almost auto biographic. It takes many of the author's boyhood experiences with simple crystal radios and relives that experience. However, with 35 years in the industry and over 70 US patents, he can now gives a much more thorough analysis of how and why the simple crystal radio works and how to improve it.

The author then proceeds to improve the performance of a simple crystal radio. Covering the analysis of amplifiers, mixers, and filters and using these building blocks to construct his "super radios". A unique chapter is given on "Inductorless Radios". Using Gyrators as inductors, Mr. Quan shows several radio architectures using op amps to construct gyrators (and thus inductors) and build successful high performance radios. There is even a chapter on how to make your own signal generators for testing these circuits.

The book can be described as broken into two sections. The first section for the casual hobbyist who wants to improve his/her understanding of radio receiver design and a second section for the more advanced radio engineer. The second section on analysis of distortion and noise is more typically taught at the graduate level at most engineering schools.

The Chapters on Software Define (SDR) radios takes the reader from superheterodyne architecture to the present state of the art SDR radio using I and Q of a radio signal. He goes on the say, "With I and Q you can demodulate anything." Although one does not need to understand all the trigonometry involved in deriving many of the equations, Mr. Quan takes a step by step approach to the derivations. This approach is lacking in most radio text books.

Last, Mr. Quan covers a chapter on bipolar noise with real life examples and numerical calculations for common components and configurations.

This is a very refreshing book and most of it can be read not as rigorous college engineering text book but more like a "novel" for the radio hobbyist.

A nice, interesting book for tinkerers

At first, I was a bit disappointed in the book, as the first few chapters were very elementary for the rank amateur or beginning hobbyist. However, the following chapters quickly delved into some good transistor radio projects, with the later chapters devoted to the theory (and math) of the receiver circuitry and the energy saving (low power) techniques. It was a good read, plenty of fodder for some future projects, and a nice reference book for my electronics library as well. Very well written and easy to read schematics. You will get something out of it and learn a few things regardless of your knowledge level.

A fun and exciting book

I REALLY enjoyed "Weaver's Needle". It has a fascinating plot that anyone who travels can identify with and enough twists to hold my interest all the way through. The technical and administrative details are believable and add to the story line. It was a compelling read that was hard to put down. Great job!

I found this book to be very interesting. The plot was well thought out and the twists were unique. It addressed issues in the industry that are current while also referencing events from the past. A good book for those interested in airplanes or the airlines.

Outstanding First Novel

Weaver's Needle is the first novel of retired airline manager, Roland
Smith. Using his considerable knowledge of airlines and commercial
aircraft, and the culture of commercial airline employees, Smith has
spun a fictional sequel to the infamous D.B. Cooper hijacking that is
to be admired both for its writing and for its technical accuracy.
The hero, Jack Traner, is the typical engineer, caught up in the
circumstances of his company's poor decisions about profit, employee
welfare, and safety, that is a metaphor for the way many companies
are operating in today's financially driven economy. Trainer is just
one of the many disgruntled employees out there because of the
operating practices used by greedy executives and curmudgeon bosses
who have risen to power by using Machiavellian practices.

After his wife's death caused by the neglect of his superiors, Jack
Traner plots his revenge and carries it out in minute detail. An
unfortunate incident threatens to unravel his perfectly executed
plan; but, as with any good novel, an appropriate twist saves the
day. The only drawbacks are that the desert incident would seem to
be very unlikely and the total escape of a suspect with complete
known history and identification, including age, fingerprints, photos
and known skill sets by the FBI and Interpol could succeed.

Roland Smith's story is very straightforward and easy to follow. His
characters are well developed and the interpersonal relationships are
very strong and believable. I highly recommend anyone interested in
airplanes, airlines, corporation politics, or D.B. Cooper read this
novel. However, anyone interested in a contemporary, well thought
out, hijacker as Robin Hood story, should read it for pure enjoyment.

About the Author
Paul Halter was born in Hagenau, Alsace, in 1956. He pursued technical studies in his youth before joining the French Marines in the hope of seeing the world. Disappointed with the lack of travel, he left the military and, for a while, sold life insurance while augmenting his income playing the guitar in the local dance orchestra. Upon discovering the writings of John Dickson Carr, he gave up the guitar for the pen. He has since written over 30 novels, almost all ‘locked room,’ including ‘The Lord of Misrule,’ ‘The Fourth Door’ – which won the coveted Prix du Roman Policier in 1987, ‘The Seven Wonders of Crime’ and ‘The Demon of Dartmoor’,all available in English on Amazon and Kindle. In 2006 his collection of short stories ‘The Night of the Wolf’ appeared, to critical acclaim.

Halter is as diabolical as ever

Another highly recommended whodunit/howdunit by Paul Halter translated by John Pugmire. The premise above says enough about the actual storyline that to add anything more would probably make for spoilers. Grabbing the reader in the first chapter, Halter's lean narrative style and penchant for using dialogue whenever possible make this a novel that moves along at a brisk pace, adding bafflement upon bafflement until Dr. Twist reveals the answers. Any and every fan of the "impossible crime" story should consider Paul Halter "must" reading. Those who like to try to solve the mysteries before the detective does are advised not to take anything or anyone for granted.

Keep 'em coming, Messrs. Halter and Pugmire!

An invisible killer haunts this English village

The delicious thing about this mystery is that the killer of three pretty young barmaids, a young wife, and a handsome actor appears to be invisible. Witnesses claim an invisible push sent the victims to their deaths. People are pushed off cliffs, down stairs and out of windows. No wonder the locals are keeping an eye out for the Evil One.

There's a rocky summit over rushing waters just outside the village - a convenient spot for dispatching people. Thick fogs also beset the area - a great aid to nefarious acts. Naturally enough the village is a hotbed of superstition. The murderer makes clever use of melodramatic local legends.

It's hard to believe sometimes that Paul Halter is French; he's so good at creating an atmospheric English village and town characters to go with it.

This is one of Halter's Dr. Twist mysteries. Twist is a criminologist, good at penetrating the twisted minds and methods of murderers. He seems to enjoy tormenting his sidekick, Inspector Hurst of Scotland Yard, by not sharing theories with him until the last minute. In this he reassembles other fictional investigators of genius with their Watsons.

Twist sees the case as "more like a fairy tale than a police investigation," but he's determined to solve it logically anyway. I had my eye on the wrong suspect right till the end. The identity of the murderer was a total surprise to me.

This book deserves high marks for supernatural atmosphere, devious murder methods, convincing characters, and a dramatic denouement.

One of the great impossible crime mysteries of all time!

Halter sets the bar very very high with his creative premise-an invisible murderer! Witnesses see victims pushed to their death-by no one visible-on a number of occasions.
But despite the inherent impossibility of the murders, Halter has devised a satisfying and very, very clever solution, that next to no reader will anticipate. The author continues to impress in a genre where one would think it's all been done before. I'm deliberately, as the prior reviewer also did, refraining from any plot details beyond what's in the book description above. When you've finished this you'll want to reread it to see how brilliantly Halter pulled the wool over your eyes. One major clue was right out there, but I missed it, and I suspect I won't be alone. This is a very creepy novel, perfectly-paced. Many many thanks to John Pugmire, who has single-handedly made this wonderful mystery novelist available to an English audience. This is the quintessential one-sitting read, although, like me, you may want to take breaks to try to figure out how the killer could have done what he did, and to make this last a bit longer to lessen the gap between this and the next Halter Pugmire makes accessible. If this is your first Halter, you'll want to get the other three Pugmire has translated.

Illustrating the design, construction, and final rendering of a single project, and introducing new features as needed, it drives toward a final goal and artistic vision that started out as a sketch on paper.

The first noticeable thing about this book is the keyboard/icon tear-out sheet, which is invaluable. Featuring every icon in Max's many toolbars on one side, and the most commonly needed keyboard shortcuts on the other, this two-page sheet printed on heavy paper helps the new user get more proficient in Max through keyboard shortcuts and by making it easier to decipher onscreen icons.

The 10 chapters illustrate the step-by-step process of creating and refining an idea, building the set, applying materials, adding lights and animation, and putting it all together in the final rendering. Each chapter is clear, concise, and designed to build on previous material while introducing new functions. The only downside is that the book has no color images--a few pages of color graphics would have been great for illustrating ideas that were presented in the chapter on lighting or surface materials, for example.

The real-world approach that is taken by 3D Studio Max 3 Workshop is encouraging and realistic. If you are serious about learning how to use Max and working professionally in 3-D computer graphics and animation, this book makes a solid teacher. Simple Awesome

From trying ot get your thoughts on paper to leanring eye catching tips for scene setup, you simpl cant go wrong. The author starts by emplaining basic concepts of scene setup and walks you thorugha very logical order of setting these up in max and explaining every little detail about what is happening and why it you are doing it. The ONLY gripe i have is, their seems to be a key scene that in the beginning the author needs you to load for camera setup, and it is missing from the cd. Other then that, this book walks you through an entire project of modelling, atmospheric setup, specials effects, compositing and sound integration. EXCELLENT JOB, but i want that TheEndCamera.max file! :))

Perfect for Beginners and Intermediate Users

This was the second book on Max that I bought. The first was the Visual Quickstart Guide which helped me learn the interface, but left me unsure of how to make a real animation or scene of any complexity. Workshop is exactly what I needed though. It takes you step by step through the creation of an entire scene and along the way explains why to use certain techniques and tools. The author also throws in several useful sections on general art and design principles.
After reading this book I feel confident in making some simple animations and scenes that don't require any real complex modelling or animation. I also feel prepared to read intermediate books dealing more in depth with modelling, animation, etc.
The only hangup I found was near the beginning of the book where a camera just appears in the scene without the author making any mention of how to create it. This was easy to fix though by importing the camera from one of the scene files on the CD-Rom.

Great book to start out with!

I thought this book was absolutely perfect for me. I was just beginning to use MAX when I got this book, and it has taught me a lot. Some of the other reviews mention something about the missing camera file; it's true that it's missing, but it is very easy to replace. All you have to do is merge one of the .max files from the CD (example - "ExBGPyramid.max") and it will ask you what you want to merge into your scene, you simply select the camera and there it is. So to all the 3D Studio Max newbies out there, I urge you to purchase this book!

Nuts-and-bolts of a Learning Organisation

This is one of the few books that manage to get into the guts of learning organisations, past conceptual pondering and into nuts-and-bolts of turning the concepts into practices.
The structure of this book is somewhat confusing, as it is easy to lose track of the nested levels of subtitles, with about the same size of headings. Several pages long lists do not make it any easier to remember, what is the actual issue of the chapter in question.
This book is widely used in management courses but I would not require my students to memorize those lengthy lists of connected tidbits. In my opinion this is much more applicable as a thought provoker or even a reference for a manager of an emerging learning organisation.
This is not a bad book, far from it. Especially the use of actual cases to stress the point of each chapter works very well.
