Auster's Austerities

This collection of essays, interviews, and prefaces explores the theme of "Hunger" (whether spiritual or artistic) in modern fiction, poetry, and art. Auster's essays celebrate (or provide a general overview of) works (or careers) of important artists, such as Knut Hamsun, Samuel Beckett, John Ashbery, William Bronk, Georges Perec, and Franz Kafka. Kafka is the subject of two essays in the book, and his story "A Hunger Artist" is for Auster a sort of template or emblem for the seriousness of the modern artist's task. Hunger, for Auster, seems to be a kind of rebellion, a reluctance to collaborate with the failures of Western culture, and yet it is, at times, both purifying and self-destructive. Auster does not present simple resolutions regarding this predicament. Rather, he appreciates the noble struggle each of these artists has waged. And though Auster seems to admire each of the figures he writes about, he is not uncritical of them. His piece entitled "Kafka's Letters" reveals his deep admiration of Kafka, yet Auster does not present the Czech author as a "literary giant", but as a man--an amazingly insightful, intelligent, generous man, who, despite his troubled inner life, managed to remain committed to his art and to his friends until his excruciating last moments. The piece exalts Kafka by humanizing him, deepening our admiration of both Kafka and Auster. "The Art of Hunger" ends with "The Red Notebooks," an interesting meditation on coincidence, which includes fascinating anecdotes from Auster's own life. In all, this is a satisfying collection of prose pieces that fans of Auster's fiction (and/or fans of the artists discussed in the book) should thoroughly enjoy.

About the Author
Anthony Bailey is the author of two studies of Rembrandt and a full-length life of Turner. For many years he was a writer for The New Yorker. He was born in Portsmouth and studied history at Oxford University. His many books include a novel, Major Andre, and two much-acclaimed memoirs, America, Lost & Found and England, First & Last. He lives in Greenwich.

THE MASTERY OF DELFT -- THE MASTERY OF ANTHONY BAILEY

I'm certainly no expert on the non-fiction genre and definitely no expert on art history but I do know a well-researched and enjoyable piece of work when I come across it. I came in the backdoor on this one having become fascinated by Vermeer after reading Tracy Chevalier's Girl With A Pearl Earring. I followed that one up with Susan Vreeland's Girl In Hyacinth Blue and then came across Anthony Bailey's book. What a wonderful way to continue my journey into this author's own portrait of this master painter and what a surprise to find that it contains black and white and some color pictures of Vermeer's paintings as well.
While very little is known about Vermeer's life, through the genius of Bailey, you come away from this book feeling you know the man. What we do know is that he lived in the mid 17th century, was a Reformed Protestant until he married the Catholic Catharina Bolnes and fathered 11 children as well as 35 masterpieces. At a time when painters were in abundance in Delft and industry was striving, the picture of Vermeer is still that of a struggling artist trying to feed and clothe a large family. It is a wonder, Bailey points out, that amidst all the noise and commotion that must have gone on in his house and the financial problems that must have weighed heavily on his shoulders, that he was still able to paint such masterpieces that put the beholder at ease merely by their stillness. Vermeer was never an "all-inclusive artist" notes Bailey and none of his paintings incorporate a single flower. He favored the use of the "local colours" of yellow, white and blue. Bailey also notes that he was "fond of rendering the effects of sunlight and sometimes succeeded to the point of complete illusion."
The author mentions the trademarks found in Vermeer's paintings -- the white wine jug, the map on the wall, the bowl of fruit on a carpeted table, finials in the form of a lion's head at the back of the chair and, my personal favorite, the black and white floor tiles that helped the artist establish perspective. He also explains Vermeer's possible use of the camera obscura to focus his view. There were so many interesting things presented by the author, one of which was the different way Vermeer signed his name. Bailey shows five different signatures all playing around with the V and M in Vermeer's name. Another thing I found engrossing was how Vermeer put things into his paintings and then painted them out. We can only see this now because of modern X-ray and infrared equipment.
I could go on and on about all I learned after reading this book but some of the more interesting parts occur after Vermeer's death and have to do with Hitler's possession of some of these masterpieces as well as Van Meegeren's forgeries of Vermeer's works in the 1900's. Of the 35 known Vermeer works, one painting, The Concert, is still missing, having been stolen in 1990.
I culminated my fascination of Vermeer with a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this week to see the Delft/Vermeer exhibit. Having just read Bailey's book, I felt quite knowledgeable not only concerning Vermeer but all things Delft in general. Upon exiting the exhibit, I walked directly into the gift shop where Anthony Bailey's book was not only on sale but being purchased by all those around me. So not only do I congratulate this author on a work well done, but also on the best timing possible for publication that one could imagine.
I'll end this review with my favorite lines from the book -- those that sum up Vermeer's life in the eyes of Anthony Bailey. "He remains in some respects, the missing man in some of his own paintings: the person who has just left the room, or who is expected at any moment. He is impatient to be found, to be seen, but while he waits, he paints stillness."
Anthony Bailey has made Johannes Vermeer come alive for me with interesting stories, things that might have been and a wonderfully descriptive Delft region by which Vermeer was obviously inspired. To me he is no longer lost, but found on the pages written by Bailey.

Anthony Baily's biography of the elusive Vermeer is really a study of the Netherlands, or more specifically, the town of Delft, in the mid-seventeenth-century. I suppose there is no other way to write a biography of a man of whom so little is known, and Baily's efforts are resoundingly successful. His descriptions of city scenes, cultural events, churches, houses, markets, etc., are rendered with astonishing skill and verve. His thumbnail history sketches are always lively and never seem rushed. There are surely more detailed studies of Vermeer's work, but Baily is far more interested in placing the artist in his context than he is in producing the definitive read of the master's painting. And while readers interested in all of Dutch culture in the Golden Age might find Simon Schama's "Embarrassment of Riches" a more detailed and global work, I think Baily is by far the superior writer, and the reader comes away with a full and stimulating picture of Vermeer's world.

Gentle and Serene

Anthony Bailey is the ideal author to write about Vermeer: like his subject's paintings his prose is quiet, calm, introspective, and serene. He illuminates Vermeer and his work, but as in the paintings discussed the light is gentle, and golden, never harsh - like a good poet, Bailey leaves plenty of room for the reader to reflect on his/her reality as he describes his subject.
It's wonderful to think of Vermeer painting his silence-drenched, calm and mysterious images amid the noise and tumult of his house filled with eleven children. Perhaps his paintings were a world of perfect order and quiet that he could retreat to when his messy and noisy surroundings became overwhelming. I also liked Bailey's point that perhaps Vermeer painted so few images because almost all of his best work had sunlight streaming through a window, and the Dutch climate doesn't offer too many sunny days to paint from!
The book opened with a bit more 15th and 16th century Dutch history than I would have cared for, but hold tight, once he switches his focus to Vermeer's paintings the book takes flight, and you will never look at the paintings in the same way again. The black and white reproductions don't do the paintings justice however - I'd recommend having a book of color reproductions of the paintings (there are only 37 known Vermeers!) next to you as Bailey gently helps you see these familiar images in wonderfully new ways.

This is a unique book that will quickly find an important place among the standard references for primary care pediatric providers.  It is comprehensive and well written, covering much of what primary care providers encounter that is absent from the standard intensive care textbooks of neonatology. There is no comparable books in this area -- this fills an important need.

This book from the American Academy of Pediatrics is directed at primary care physicians or nurse practitioners who care for newborns with common problems. The book differs from standard neonatal books in that it does not emphasize intensive care or the care of extremely premature infants, but rather a practical approach to common problems seen in the first month of life.

The purpose is to provide "an action-oriented working tool" for primary care providers on common neonatal problems. This is a very worthwhile objective; these issues are often overlooked in standard textbooks. Under the direction of editor Dr. Deborah Campbell, the more than 50 contributors certainly meet their goal.

The book is aimed at primary care providers, but active neonatologists also may use this as a reference for the frequent consult in the well-baby nursery. The editor and many of the contributors are well-known authorities in the field. The book has been reviewed by experts in the relevant sections and committees of the American Academy of Pediatrics

About the Author

Deborah Campbell, MD, FAAP, is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Program Director for the fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and Director of the Division of Neonatology at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She conducts the Low birth weight infant Evaluation and Assessment Program (LEAP) and has served various leadership roles at the American Academy of Pediatrics, New York State Association of Regional Perinatal Programs and Networks, NYC Local Early Intervention Coordinating Council, and Greater New York March of Dimes Health Professionals Advisory Board and National March of Dimes.

She is a member of the Greater New York Hospital Association Perinatal Safety Collaborative Advisory Group, the National Quality Forum Perinatal Collaborative, and the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative Neonatology Expert Workgroup. She also serves on the NYS Palliative Care Education and Training Council, an expert panel that has developed guidance and advice for the New York State Department of Health on best practices in pain management and end-of-life care. She served as a member on the AAP Taskforce on Implementation of Newborn Hearing Screening and the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program. She is currently co-chair of the Bright Futures Guidelines, 4th edition Infancy Expert Panel.

WOW!

This book was one of the few books that I have picked up WILLINGLY and actually completed! I for the life of me could not put this book down. There was a twist at the turn of every page and at multiple time through out reading, I forgot I was even reading! I felt like I was there with him in person going through the stages of his life. I felt like I could relate with SOME of his emotions and situations being from Los Angeles and in the military. The way the system worked and his attitude toward everything astounded me. It seemed like a never ending struggle. Anyway! Get this book, read it, and prepare for the ride of your life!

Good read.

Very gripping autobiography, I could relate and understand where he is coming from. To leave that life behind is difficult and mad props to Kali for staying and living positive. Kali didn't graduate an ivy league university as English major, so there are all kinds of grammar and spelling errors In this book. He arose out of the unforgiving streets of Oakland and the way the book is written is raw and real.

Inspiring

I thought this book was repetitive at first but I kept reading wondering if he was ever going to get tired of all the crazy ways! I'm glad I didn't put it down and stop reading it ended up being a great book. I have seen people make it out of the ghetto with absolutely no criminal record and I've also sadly had friends who caught life sentences at 15-16 years old. I did not grow up in the ghetto but I have unfortunately seen my brother do a few years in prison it definitely makes me so humble. Definitely a must read! Makes me that more sure about my career path that I have chosen to study for!

The Valentine Infantry Tank III, a private venture design from Vickers-Armstrong, was the 3rd of Great Britain's infantry tank designs. Though not the 1st tank to go into battle against the Axis in WWII, the Valentine has the distinction of having the highest production numbers of any wartime British tank, and arguably the most variations. A total of 8,275 Valentines were produced in no fewer than 11 major variants. Early versions of the vehicle were equipped with gasoline engines, while a diesel powered the later Marks. The turret also saw development, with later models fit with a more elongated design. The Valentine received its baptism of fire with the British 8th Army in Operation Crusader in North Africa during July 1941, just the beginning of a long career, as they would eventually take part in combat in both the European and Pacific Theaters. After the war, Valentines continued to serve several British Commonwealth armies as late as the 1950s. Besides fighting under the Union Jack, Valentines saw action with the armed forces of Canada, the Soviet Union, Australia, and New Zealand. Illustrated with 250 photos, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 88 pages.

Valentine Tank Walk Around

The British Valentine tank was not the best of WW2, but since it was about the best the Brits had at the time, over 8200 were made. The early versions had 2lbr cannon (40mm) later had 6 lbr (57mm). Key differences were found in which mark had a 2 man turret vs. 3 man turret.

This Walk Around has photos of the Mark III, Mark VI photos and Mark IX. Photos by author David Doyle and Dennis Trowbridge are fantastic. Unfortunately, the photos of the Mark VI were taken indoors and the tank looks blue and on the darker side. These photos are OK, but there are no interior shots to show the difference of a 2 vs 3 man turret. A line drawing would have been very useful here.

As a modeler, I would absolutely recommend this book to someone building a version of the Valentine. The captions are excellent, there is a ton of information helpful to modelers, armor buffs, definitely a book to add to the library, just not quite up to the usual gold star standard found in the Walk Around Series (many of them authored by David Doyle).

Following the release and huge success of my first book, I went to work testing some theories I had developed. I had experimented and played around with these concepts and schemes for a long time, but never really explored all of the variations and many possibilities they offered. I have found that, as youth coaches, we have very little time to install extra components. Therefore, we need to maximize our efforts toward developing a philosophy and system wherein everything we do integrates easily otherwise our ability to execute the offense at a high level will be compromised. This book is designed to be used in conjunction with my first book Youth Double Wing: A Winning Youth Offense but the concepts can be easily adapted into any offense with a series based philosophy. Obviously the main focus of the book is the use of direct snap components that have made the single wing straight series so successful throughout football history. In fact, because of their fundamental soundness, there has been a recent reemergence of these concepts at the Division I and NFL levels. From the editor Michael Moreno: "Here we see an elegant expansion of ideas previously set forth, as well as the cultivation of new ideas, and complimentary schemes - all thoroughly presented in a book designed to be read cover-to-cover or as a broad reference source. Chapters 1-7 describe fundamental and advanced concepts (I particularly like the chapters on reading and manipulating the defense to optimize play calling) relevant to all play series, while Chapters 8-16 can be approached as independent frameworks that do not need to be read in sequence. There is some redundancy in these latter chapters that is deliberate, and intended to allow the reader to view these chapters in any order. We've also included an expansive Appendix that is essentially a book within the book, rounding out a very informative body of work that any football coach will appreciate. In contributing to this effort I have learned a great deal from a master coach that has left no stone unturned in his efforts to better understand and teach what is necessary to build and sustain a successful football program. A Master's Course in the youth DW

You want some additional complexity above and beyond the base double wing as detailed in Jack's first book, the Youth DW? You want to mix in some direct snap (shotgun) to the offense, but not go completely over to the single wing? This book has it - an amazingly detailed and comprehensive manual on some twists to the DW offense for youth. He took everything he learned writing his Youth DW and 63 Defense books, along with what he's learned through the years running this offense at the youth level, and put it into this book. GREAT book, can't recommend it enough.

Lots of angst in a 95 page novella

ACHING FOR YOU by A.C. Nixon is a 95 page contemporary military romance. This novella is apparently a continuation of another book by the same author, but the book description is confusing as it reads, "This 33,500-word novella continues where Aching for You ended, but can be enjoyed on its own"....well, it's obviously not a continuation of itself...so it must be a continuation of a different title.... As for standing on its own, I have to marginally disagree-- The opening scene left me wondering what on earth was going on. We learn that Gunnery Sergent Joseph Sanders is determined to win his woman back (Veronica [Ronnie] Mills), that he's never going to let her go again, that he's learned from his mistakes (OK, evidently a previous book's story)....and throughout the novella, Joe keeps making this same mistake...over and over and over.

I wanted to smack him upside the head.

I get it. He's a hot-headed Marine. He's a Spec Ops Warrior. [and my FAVORITE HEROES are alpha male military men-- I've read MANY in this genre.] He's been badly hurt in the past (superb back-story and life experience that has made him who he is and defines how and why he reacts the way he does). But so has Ronnie. She's got good reason to fall in love with Joe (the scenes where he refuses to let *anyone* dis her melted me!)....and very good reason to be hurt when he responds like a Neanderthal. Joe and Ronnie are mad at each other more not.

I couldn't quite fathom WHY, exactly, they claimed to be in love...? I assume the falling-in-love stuff happened in the previous book to which this supposed 'stand alone' is the sequel. I hope it happened; I sure didn't see it here.

What's with misspelling (the correct) Sergeant as Sargent (the phonetic spelling)?

This novella has strong themes of commitment, consequences, angst, jealousy, family ties, romantic love, trust, and forgiveness. Significant elements of Dom/sub.

Sensuality level: spicy bordering on steaming
Language: rated R

Sadly, I'm not all that jazzed about reading more from this author. It just didn't grab me and demand an emotional reaction-- I wanted to care that these two found resolutions to their problems and had some hope for a happy future...but just couldn't get there. Maybe it was her distractions with Ares? Maybe it was the comparably shallow points of view? Not sure. It just fell short. Recommended with reservations.

Forgive Each Other

Read through the second book and all that ran through my mind was "You two need to get your crap together, forgive those in the past that hurt you, take a chance, and forgive each other."

Good second installment to the first book. Again, you find yourself hating Ronnie's mother and what to bitch-slap her. New characters come into Ronnie and Joe's relationship and you don't know if they will make them or break them.

I hope that there's a part three.

About the Author

Miles Maguire is a professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where he teaches writing, editing and reporting. He has worked as a beat writer, columnist, Washington bureau chief and monthly magazine editor, and his innovative approach to journalism has been recognized in programs such as the Knight-Batten Awards and the Great Ideas for Teachers (GIFT) competition sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. His media scholarship and criticism have appeared in Folio:, American Journalism Review, Newspaper Research Journal, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Media Economics, The International Journal on Media Management and the Journal of Information Technology & Politics. I was disappointed

I tried to use this book as a newcomer to the optimal control two years ago. I was reading it patiently and I even tried to add some infromation from the internet. But the book is very difficult to understand. Many steps in deriving new formulas are unclear and left unexplained.
I really do not recommend it as a student's book. Now I am more familiar with optimal control theory, but I still cannot find this book useful. It might be useful as refrence, but I doubt it.

This book should be much better

It is a classic book on advanced LQR control and has been cited extensively. But it is not easy to read and not appropriate for self-learning. In addition, many symbols and notations are out of fashion. For example, the state-space representation of a linear system in this book is dx/dt=Fx+Gu instead of dx/dt=Ax+Bu. The matrix transpose is denoted as A' instead of A^T. The book is published in 1990. I hope it can be revised so as to attract more readers.

By the way, I recently found a very good math book on advanced LQR named "Linear systems and control" by MJ Corless. It provides many useful proofs on basic LQR related problems.

Great Reference Book

It is a great reference book; though I believe you could learn the subject matter from the book, I can't speak for it. I am currently a Phd Student in Astrodynamics focusing on formation flying and I have had a grad. level course on LQR/LQE, following that it is an excellent reference text if you need to look something up.
