About the Author

Jamie Oliver started cooking at his parents' pub, The Cricketers, in Clavering, Essex, at the age of eight. After leaving school he began a career as a chef that took him to the River Café, where he was famously spotted by a television production company.

His television and publishing career began in 1999 with The Naked Chef series. Since then he has set up Fifteen restaurant in London, changed school dinners in the UK and revolutionized home cooking. His charity, The Jamie Oliver Foundation, seeks to improve people's lives through food.

Tasty and healthy super food recipes, a brilliant book

I am a big fan of Jamie Oliver and I was so pleased to hear the premise of this new book was around super foods and balanced eating; not low calorie foods but making nutritionally balanced meals that will still bring you in under your recommended calories for the day. Perfect.

I have posted a full recipe list at the end of this review for those wondering what kind of recipes are in the book.

I have to start this review with a summary in that I really do love this book, it’s a wonderful addition to my (growing) collection of Jamie’s books, plus I know that I should be eating a bit better and this book really has sincerely given me a fresh burst of inspiration… I made one of the best pasta dishes I’ve had in a long time from this book (Skinny Carbonara)... without cream.

Before actually trying it I wasn't sure if I would be ok with replacing the cream in my carbonara with natural yoghurt (and a few other changes), but honestly it was an absolute dream, the skinny carbonara tasted fresh and light and was still filling (thanks to the whole wheat pasta). You can tell these recipes are really well researched and thought through but it tasted so good too!

Unlike Jamie's other books I think this one may have a very slightly narrower appeal; all the recipes look very tasty indeed but there are some, my parents for example, who are very traditional shall we say, and wouldn't dream of blitzing up dates and mixing them with spices to make 'energy balls', or taking cream out of pasta dishes for that matter! But they do love all of Jamie's other books. Personally I love this book as it's about making tasty and balanced meals and it's packed full of beautiful pictures too.

The book is full of doable super food recipes, split by meal time and a really nice section at the back of the book with advice on ‘living well’.

I’ve uploaded a couple of images of my skinny carbonara and 'happiness pasta' that I have already made from this book (thanks to some pre-release recipes I had). In short if you are looking to eat a more balanced, nutritionally dense diet and want a book packed with doable recipes, with lots of images as well as calorie information, then this is one of the best out there in my opinion and I have a room literally stacked full of cook books.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS & PAGE LAYOUT

When I first got the book I absolutely loved how it felt and looked; in line with its theme the book has a very 'clean' and fresh layout, that's a little paired back.

Every recipe page has a photo (huge bonus for me) and also has the following information:

Nutritional info per serving: calories, fat, sat fat, protein, carbs, sugar, fibre

SECTIONS

The book is split into 4 main recipe sections, split by meal time:

Breakfast (up to 400 calories)
Lunch (up to 600 calories)
Dinner (up to 600 calories)
Snacks and Drinks (varies)

I love this, I'm not a calorie counter (although my wife is), but this means I can do recipes from this book knowing I will be staying under my daily recommended calories (2500 for me, 2000 for my wife), with the option for additional snacks.

The last section of the book after the recipes is called ‘Live Well’, it has the following sub sections:

As you can probably tell from the section headers, the last 40 pages of the book are dedicated more to generic diet advice. For the book Jamie has taken advice from experts in the world of nutrition, health and sleep and put it into bite sized chunks of advice. It’s definitely worth checking out this section once you’ve got over the excitement of the recipes; although if I’m honest it was the recipes and trying them out that I was most excited about.

RECIPES ON TEST

I have tried three recipes so far and all have come out very well, and very different to any pasta dishes that I would typically make (I have uploaded a couple of images of my attempts).

It is nice to be able to make healthy meals where the ingredients are very easy to come by. Other ‘health’ books that I own require a specific trip a health foods store but not the case with these recipes.

I made Happiness Pasta and this was lovely, using ricotta and aubergines and with no meat it was very tasty indeed, and having the calorie information to hand is such a huge bonus. Small changes made this recipe healthier than how I would normally cook including steaming the aubergine with the chillies was absolutely beautiful, whereas normally I would griddle it with a good lug of oil.

Same with the skinny carbonara and differences, as I normally make a very ‘fat’ carbonara. This one contained fat free natural yoghurt in place of cream and I was sceptical but it was genuinely absolutely gorgeous. It was fresh, zingy, I would never have dreamt of doing a pasta dish like this with yoghurt and lemon, I did wonder if I was potentially going to end up wasting ingredients as I was making this and it all came together at the end as with all of Jamie's recipes over the years.

I also made the ‘Energy Balls’ which were basically medjool dates blitzed up with some lovely spices, and coated in blitzed pumpkin seeds, but these were devoured very quickly, which I take as a huge compliment, so whilst the basis of the recipes are healthy I think we have to work on our portion control.

I have high expectations with Jamie’s books as I’ve found all his others to be the ones I reference most out of my entire collection, and this Everyday Super Food book is a wonderful addition to my shelf.

I feel like I've grown up cooking from all of Jamie's books, and this Super Food book is quite timely for me as I start to feel a little more like I should start to take care of my body and be conscious of what I eat as I approach my mid-thirties.

And true to form Jamie has given me inspirational recipes with unfussy and easy to find ingredients, I like that you don't have to take a special trip to the health foods store to do these recipes, Jamie has made them accessible and tasty. I really can't think of a more reliable cook book author. I love Jamie's other books and I'm over the moon with this one. Love it.

Delicious

This is my new favorite Jamie Oliver cookbook. I've only made the first three recipes (Baked Eggs in Popped Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Ricotta on Toast; Granola Dust; and Magic Poached Eggs, Smashed Avo & Seeded Toast), but those three recipes were amazing. They were delicious, filling, and weren't nearly as time consuming to make as I thought they would be. Some of the recipes do require specialty ingredients, but they are easy enough to substitute. For example, instead of hazelnut milk for one of the recipes I'll be using almond milk, and I'll probably substitute brown rice for black rice. But it's not a big enough inconvenience to take away any stars. Can't wait to try the other recipes!

This book is downright delicious to read! The images, recipes and ideas are extraordinary!
I learned how to poach eggs "magically" after years of trying to poach them! In ONE go- with embedded chillis! See "magic poached eggs".

Hasker begins by mounting a compelling critique of the dominant paradigm in philosophy of mind, showing that contemporary forms of materialism are seriously deficient in confronting crucial aspects of experience. He further holds that popular attempts to explain the workings of mind in terms of mechanistic physics cannot succeed. He then criticizes the two versions of substance dualism most widely accepted today―Cartesian and Thomistic―and presents his own theory of emergent dualism. Unlike traditional substance dualisms, Hasker's theory recognizes the critical role of the brain and nervous system for mental processes. It also avoids the mechanistic reductionism characteristic of recent materialism.

Hasker concludes by addressing the topic of survival following bodily death. After demonstrating the failure of materialist views to offer a plausible and coherent account of that possibility, he considers the implications of emergentism for notions of resurrection and the afterlife.

Innovative and Stimulating

William Hasker's The Emergent Self is an excellent book on philosophy of mind. While the majority of philosophers in the field are gravitating towards forms of "physicalism" and "materialism" (even among Christians!), Hasker resists this trend with compelling arguments. This book is worth buying, if for no other reason, than its criticisms of a physicalist view of the mind. To date, I have not seen physicalists begin to answer the type of problems that Hasker brings to a point in this book.

In addition to his devastating criticism of physicalism, Hasker's book is also truly innovative. He develops arguments in detail for a specific type of dualism--emergent dualism--that is significantly different from Cartesian dualists (like Swinburne) and Thomistic dualists (like Stump). Hasker's innovative philosophical work broadens the playing field for dualists, which many will welcome given the failures of physicalism and classical problems with traditional dualist views. Hasker shows that dualism is not a simple theory that fits one mold. Those only familiar with traditional dualisms will find new and significant ideas to engage in this articulate book.

Hasker writes with lucidity, rigor, and wit that makes forging through the rough terrain of analytic philosophy of mind a delight, rather than a task. Those with an interest in physicalism, emergentism, dualism, or any general topic in the philosophy of mind will benefit from the work put into this book.

Excellent overview, conclusion begs the question

As an amateur philosopher, I found this book extremely helpful in getting a handle on the different views and arguments about consciousness. It took a good look at materialism and dualism and explained why they are insufficient theories in both logical and prose form. The writing was very clear and, for the most part, concise.
The author concludes with his own version of dualism which I didn't buy at all. But despite the ending, this book is worth buying for everything else.

The best review of emergent theories of mind ever!

There was no question in my mind that this book deserved 5 stars. It is an important addition to the literature in philosophy of mind. As with many such works in philosophy, Hasker spends the first four fifths of his book examining other theories of mind including eliminitavism, mind-brain identity, and various dualisms of both the substance and property variety. He explores their strengths, what motivates them, and their weaknesses. In doing this, he covers more ground and makes finer distinctions than many other recent entries in the field. He is also graciously fair. He takes pains to point out where and why incomplete or even incoherent theories appear reasonable in part. He examines other theories from their own internal viewpoint, what problems they try to solve, as well as in their relation to one another. He extends this fairness to his own theory offered in the last fifth of the book. He assesses not only its strengths compared to its competitors, but also its weaknesses.

Along the way, Hasker understands that epistemological and phenomenological issues have metaphysical implications and he addresses these in some detail as the need arises. He goes a little off the deep end in his last chapter where he tries to show how each of the competing theories of mind might deal with the possibility of life-after-death. He recognizes that in the end, only theologically based theories (which he does not care to explore) can provide a metaphysical ground for some of the implications present in the qualities of mind. His own theory warrents a belief in the reality of libertarian free will agency (for example) but he admits in the end that any theory beginning with the assumption that the physical is the fundamental ground of everything cannot provide any metaphysical ground for it! To his greater credit he recognizes that reaching for quantum mechanics or information theory to provide that ground goes nowhere. He explores both of these moves commonly seen in the recent literature.

I don't agree with Hasker's every conclusion but the depth and breadth of this exploration of recent work in the philosophy of mind is superbly done. Hasker writes well. His arguments are easy to follow. If you have any interest in this philosophical sub-discipline "The Emergent Self" should be a must read.

About the Author

Scott Roberts is a Principal Development Lead in the SQL Server group at Microsoft Corporation. Previously, he was a Development Lead on the InfoPath team, and was involved with InfoPath since its inception. While in the InfoPath team, he led the development of many features for designing and editing InfoPath forms. Scott is also the author of Programming Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (Microsoft Press, 1999) and numerous technical articles and publications.

 

Hagen Green is a Senior Program Manager at Microsoft Corporation, working on the Windows Phone Communications team. He previously led the User Experience Platform test team in SharePoint Foundation. He contributed chapters on InfoPath to Visual Studio Tools for Office: Using Visual Basic 2005 with Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath (Addison-Wesley, 2006), and Visual Studio Tools for Office: Using C# with Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath (Addison-Wesley, 2005).

 

Jessica Meats is a Partner Technology Advisor for Microsoft Corporation specializing in Microsoft SharePoint Server, Office and Business Intelligence. good book

First of all, this is not a step-by-step book. Most books that are have "step-by-step" in the title. The book tends to describe the functionality and capability of InfoPath in a broad conceptiual sense with some samples to help you follow along. This allows a more free-form experience where you can read what you're intersted in but there isn't an overly sequential, structured learning path.
I like it so far, exactly what I was looking for.

Too lengthy, too pricey, Step By Step is better

I have changed my opinion and now recommend this over InfoPath Step By Step by Shadravan and Rogers.Using Microsoft InfoPath 2010 with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) if you are trying to buy only one InfoPath book. Farther into this project, I see that the no-code development techniques in S&R gets me only 80% of the way to the goal-- replacing a legacy app that evolved over several years. To reproduce all the features of the legacy app in an InfoPath form requires code-behind in either C# or VB.Net using the InfoPath object model and the .Net XPathNavigator class. I'm docking it a star because InfoPath no-code basics are covered better in S&R. If money is no object, it's still better to do the first several chapters of S&R to quickly see how to develop a no-code InfoPath form and deploy it in SharePoint Forms Services, but then the chapters in this book to learn how to use C# or VB code-behind to add additional features.

Embedded Examples Are Horrendous

While the book is pretty detailed in its coverage of InfoPath 2010, it can be be very difficult to follow the examples, which tend to be embedded in the text of the book (i.e.: not broken out into clear and easy to follow steps). The examples often tend to gloss over critical steps, and waste time on much more obvious details. If only the examples were better constructed and presented, the book would be worthy of a more positive review.

By analyzing the pottery found at a well-known archaeological site, Hilgeman constructs the long-awaited timeline for the rise and decline of this ancient society.

Located near present-day Evansville, Indiana, the Angel site is one of the important archaeological towns associated with prehistoric Mississippian society. More than two million artifacts were collected from this site during excavations from 1939 to 1989, but, until now, no systematic survey of the pottery sherds had been conducted. This volume, documenting the first in-depth analysis of Angel site pottery, also provides scholars of Mississippian culture with a chronology of this important site.

Angel is generally thought to have been occupied from before A.D. 1200 to 1450, but scholars have been forced to treat this period as one chronological unit without any sense of the growth and decline of the society that occupied it. Using radiocarbon assays and an analysis of its morphological and stylistic attributes of pottery, Sherri Hilgeman is able to divide the occupation of Angel into a series of recognizable stages. She then correlates those stages with similar ones at other archaeological excavations—especially nearby Kincaid—making it possible to compare Angel society with other native cultures of the lower Ohio Valley. Through this important contribution to native pottery studies, Hilgeman opens a window into the lifeways of prehistoric Angel society and places that society in the larger context of Mississippian culture.

About the Author
Liban Ahmad has taught Somali as a second language and worked as an item writer, translator, editor and proof-reader with the Asset Languages assessment scheme for the Languages Ladder developed by OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA examinations). He has participated in different projects on the development of Somali breakthrough, preliminary and intermediate master tasks in four language skills. He has contributed summary research on Somali public service translations to The Linguist, the magazine of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. Liban holds a Diploma in Sociology (Open University) and a Certificate in Social Science (Open University); and a Certificate of Advancement for Mentoring Primary School Pupils (validated by Liverpool University). He compiled and translated A Dictionary of Somali Verbs in Everyday Context, published by Authorhouse.
