About the Author

Geert De Schutter is a full professor at Ghent University, Belgium. He is currently conducting research in the field of concrete technology at the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research, Department of Structural Engineering. He has won several national and international awards including the Vreedenburgh Award in 1998 and the prestigious international RILEM Robert L’Hermite Medal in 2001. In 2009, he co-authored the textbook Self-Compacting Concrete. Since February 2009, Professor De Schutter has served as RILEM’s director of development.

Product design fact: A small number of features are used a lot, and most features are never used.

This idea comes from one of my favorite books, Designing Interactions, where there’s a discussion by the original interaction designer for one of the first/best mobile OSes, PalmOS. He talks about the idea that users’ interaction with products follow a Power Law distribution- a small number of features are used constantly by users, and then there’s a long tail of features that most people don’t interact with at all. This is an important idea, because it helps define what good functional design should look like.

Good design

Good interaction design means giving features prominence based on their usage level- this means some features are basically hidden, whereas some should be in your face. Using Palm as the example, you’d want to make “Add contact to addressbook” prominent but “Remove contact” should be very subtle- possible, but almost hidden. This means users will be able to pick out what they want to do, most of the time, and occasionally can pick out the corner case.

Open design

On the other hand, designing your product to be “open” and a “platform” means that you want to make anything possible. This often comes with its own design risks, because features aren’t shown to the user at the priority level associated with their usage. That’s why I find that open systems like Android, Windows, and the Facebook platform can have very messy interactions as a result.

An open platform means that a lot more is possible, but the best experiences are watered down by its desire to support an infinite number of possibilities. A more curated experience means that the best experiences can be meticulously designed, but it becomes harder to make all the combinations possible. Constraints start to dominate, but if the constraints are picked well, the experience is better off.

Different POVs

You can read this post as a discussion of Apple versus Google versus Microsoft, or you can think of it as different design philosophies for how to build products. Both are great, and can lead to fantastic things, but open versus curated can lead to very different outcomes.

Amazing content; Straight to the point

This book is way more than just viral loops - covers most aspects of product creation and distribution. The book addresses all these topics from both engineering and business perspectives. I prefer authors who shoot straight to the point and Andrew does that extremely well.

I did not like 'blog to book' format as much. The format does not follow a logical sequence. At the least, they could have created a summary section at the end to put all those articles back in perspective.

It's interesting to follow along the series of blog articles. The embedded links may be the best part of the book as they share the author's core research well.

While the ordering of the articles does hint at a major direction, I think it would have been helpful if the author had taken some time to provide his sense of everything fits together into a cohesive whole.

While it's really up to the reader to do the work, this book does provide an entry point.

I'd say it was worth reading.

Kindle Readers Beware--This is NOT the Moss-Covered Mansion

I bought this book on Kindle, but it is NOT "Nancy Drew 18: Mystery of the Moss-Covered Mansion." I don't know what book Amazon (or the publisher) sent me instead using this title, but it is not the same book. I have the original book on my book shelf at home, and it took place well before the Kennedy Space Center was named such (original copyright date of 1941). The original was actually a very good story and one of my favorite Nancy Drew mysteries. This "pseudo-story" is blaaaaaah. Isn't there some kind of quality control to ensure a title gets delivered to the Kindle with the correct corresponding story? Wouldn't this be a copyright infringement by sending this story attached to the wrong title? I'm really asking--I don't know copyright law. I feel cheated by being lured to buy this book, when it wasn't the real thing.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK ON KINDLE--IT'S A FAKE!

My 9 year old granddaughter suggested that two books in one would be easier to carry, so that's what we bought. She loved both books, proving that some things endure the test of time - Nancy is one of them.

An outsatnding textbook!

I find this book probably the best textbook in materials science I ever read. Not only the authors are experts in the field of microscopy, but they also succeeded in extremely difficult task to present the complicated science of electron microscopy in a simple (but not oversimplified!) language. The book covers all major aspects of transmission electron microscopy, and contains excellent illustrations. This book is certainly a priceless asset for students. It is recommended as one of the best books at the beginning and intermediate level. If you are looking for a book to learn TEM, get this one, you will never regret!

Excellent introduction to TEM

In the 70's and 80's the book by Hirsch et al. was the TEM reference tome, and Eddington's book the applications manual.
Time has marched on, and this book is the new replacement for both!
Carter and Williams wrote a very easy to read, yet well detailed, text and reference for TEM. They cover quite literally everything, in just the right level of detail for 1st or 2nd year grad students.
This book is the best way to get a quick grasp of TEM.

Top of the class

This 4-volume set of paperback books provides a thorough and readable introduction to the science and practice of TEM (transmission electron microscopy). The text is divided into short, digestable sections, each accompanied by figures, graphs and plots. The equations are numerous, but well explained and presented with minimal derivations but full explanations. The books are divided into concise sections making it easy for the reader to find what he/she needs. Overall, a perfect textbook to learn about TEM, and as a reference for those more experienced in this field.

About the Author
Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist practicing in Encinitas, CA. After receiving his doctorate in Psychology from Stanford University, he became one of the foremost teachers and practitioners of Ericksonian hypnotherapy. He developed Self-relations Psychotherapy, an approach that integrates mind, body and spiritual experience. Robert Dilts has been a developer, author, trainer and consultant in the field of NLP since its creation in 1975 by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. In addition to spearheading the applications of NLP to education, creativity, health, and leadership, his personal contributions to the field of NLP include much of the seminal work on NLP strategies and belief systems, and the development of 'systemic NLP'.

At the level of identity, we can say that we have two dynamics – there’s a soul and there’s an ego.These book takes the reader into an amazing self discovery journey. It is a Voyage if self discovery. It’s a journey about a type of awakening and a type of opening – an opening to what life is bringing you and calling from you.

Calling to Greatness

Why do we go off track? With beauty, grace and laughter, Gilligan and Dilts unfold the spiritual adventure behind this personal mystery. Like the great myths, stories and eternal motifs, the book covers a four day seminar bringing the writers, reader and participants together to a magical experience where active imagination is triggered and the boundaries between reader, writer and participant are no longer. I swear I was there, even though I wasn't. Like the great myths, stories and eternal motifs the book takes us through the experience of centering, not as an end, but as a means to experience the hidden positive intentions behind our demon enemies,
our problem states, our critic, our symptoms. That transmutation of these energies from negative to positive, their reintegration and acceptance occurs through attention and perspective of the center. Like all other problems, the mind-body split is a two-edged sword. Gilligan and Dilts show how readily available, waiting to happen, shifting to a body-centered perspective is, breathing, relaxing and connecting to earth, focusing attention to and through that centered rhythm and perspective, a field where all realities can be experienced and held and where opposites can find their dance, their experienced oneness and their generative greatness beyond the limited sum of their opposing parts and the gift of a "second skin," that breaks the existential trance of our lack of protection and aloneness. This shadow work reflects the The Hero's Journey, the spiritual journey of our times to live our calling and the authors immerse us in this redemptive awakening.
