This is a good book for clothing in general but not for capturing the style of Moe
By AliceTea
The title is "How to Draw Moe Characters: Costumes"
As far as I know there is no English print of this book, but it's still a decent book for clothing in general, especially school uniforms.
I wouldn't suggest this book if your looking for something entirely Moe related. (If you don't know what moe style is, look at the bottom of my review for explanation.)
I want to start by saying that this isn't a beginner's how-to book. This book is SUPPOSE to be for those who already know how to draw but wish to capture the essence of the Moe style.
HOWEVER, I didn't really find that the essence of the Moe style was captured in this book. This book, instead, seems to be for those who wish to learn more about the details of female clothing, especially those of the Japanese school uniforms. (But then again that's mostly what we see Moe characters wear because they're usually schoolgirls >.>)
I want to mention that the art is as great as the cover, though there are times where I wonder if the artists changed.
This book is amazing with detail at times, but then severely lacking at others.
For example, the first two costumes start off with the girl basically naked and shows her getting dressed, from undergarments, undershirts, socks, etc. Showing the process and the different items of clothing needed.
And then with some costumes, it shows a few outfits and the articles of clothing they'd wear, including underneath, and accessories.
And then with others it just shows a few details and a quick gist.
Honestly, it seems very sloppily put together, as though they just wanted to throw another book out there to add to the collection but their heads just weren't in it.
I know many people hate buying books without seeing what's inside, so I'll give a quick run down of what's included in this book. I'd include a few preview pages that I've scanned from the book but Amazon apparently doesn't allow that.
-Quick run down on clothing and color schemes
-START TO FINISH COSTUMES
-Maid
-Kimono
-SEASONAL WEAR (lacking but still helpful)
-Swimsuits

-Flowing and wrinkling of fabric (such as the various bending of arms and knees)
-Flowing of the skirt (such as from the wind)
-Undergarments, socks, school gym and swim outfit (how they fit the body)
-VARIOUS COSTUMES (focuses mostly on school uniforms)
-Various school uniforms (great detail)
-(various garments and accessories)
-(flow and wrinkling of the garments, such as skirts when sitting and sleeves from various movements)
-School gym uniform (decently detailed)
-School swimsuit (decently detailed)
-Basketball (lacking detail)
-Tennis (lacking)
-Cheerleading (lacking)
-Archer (lacking)
-Karate (lacking)
-Shakespeare era
-Apron/cleaning
-Kimonos
-Randomly throws in a bit about jeans
-Various different fashion styles (wasn't impressed)
-Various maid/service outfits (had a decent little bit about maid and Chinese waitress outfits including few action sketches)
-HAIR
-Various hair styles and types
-Decent 13 page bit about hair
-Awesome 3 page bit about the flow of hair (such as when affected by wind)
-A bit about hair AND clothing when laying down
-Bunch of sample art
-One digital tutorial
-Bunch of random drawings with details about different aspects of them.
-Then a whole lot of idk towards the end.
Basically, there is about 114 pages of "sorta useful" to "extremely useful", and then 42 pages of idk..inspiration?
*For those of you who don't know what "moe style" is, I'll give a quick explanation.
In this book, if you translate it, you'll often see the phrase "object of love".
Moe style is a cute, innocent, and usually childlike style. It refers to a heartwarming style because when you look at the character it creates the feeling of affection, such as when you look at an affordable fluffy animal.
The moe female characters usually portray those teens to young adults who have small frames and are often mistaken for children. You'll often see them look upon big busted girls with envy. Also, often times, moe style is sexualized, but that's completely up to you if you want to go that route, because that's not what moe style, itself, is.
